On Thursday, June 4th, Miss Maddy and I did an outreach storytime for teens with special needs at a local youth organization. There were 7 teens ranging from ages 13-17, with an array of developmental issues.
I had my coworker, Miss Maddy, come with me, and she started off by talking about our Summer Reading Programs. Our SRP theme is "Read to the Rhythm!" So I asked them what kind of music they like (Beyonce was a favorite!) and if they would show me some dance moves!

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I went to do this storytime, but it ended up going really well! Most of the teens were very engaged and interested in participating. They thought Elephants Cannot Dance was pretty funny, and they even started singing with me for Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes. Almost all of the teens participated in the flannel board rendition of Dog's Colorful Day by putting spots on Dog.
When I showed them my superhero flannel pieces, they really liked them, except for when I used Leonardo. They were insistent that Leonardo was a ninja turtle, NOT a superhero! :) The craft seemed to go over pretty well, too.
Overall, I was so pleased with how the storytime went, and I'm so glad the teens were ready and willing to participate! It was a really good time and I hope I'm able to do outreach for them again!
