This year, I've decided to start out my storytimes by going through the alphabet! I did a bunch of different themed storytimes last year, but I thought I'd give myself a break and go through the letters, which allows me to talk about a number of topics, along with the alphabet!
The Letter A:
The Letter A:
- Books used:
- From Anne to Zach by Mary Jane Martin
- Lettice: The Flying Rabbit by
- Art by Patrick McDonnell
- Ant, Ant, Ant! (An Insect Chant) by April Pulley Sayre
- There's an Alligator Under My Bed by Mercer Mayer
- ASL taught: The letter A
- Activity/Song: If you have a ______ apple
- If You have a ________ apple, a _______ apple, a _______ apple
- If you have a _______ apple, please stand up.
- (For this activity, I handed out cut out green, red, and yellow apples and handed them out to the kids. They had a lot of fun participating by bringing up the apples to me at the front of the room.)
I'm really excited about starting this new alphabet theme from week to week. Especially with teaching the kids sign language! While reading, From Anne to Zach, the kids had a blast yelling out which names were the same as theirs. They also made sure to tell me if they had any cousins, aunts, uncles, dogs, etc. with the same names! :)
The Letter B:
- Books Used:
- Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See? By Bill Martin Jr.
- Boing by Nick Bruel
- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.
- The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood
- Book! by Kristine O'Connell George
- ASL taught: The letter B
- Song/Activity: This is Big Big Big from Mel's Desk!
- This is big, big. big
- This is small, small. Small.
- This is short, short, short
- This is tall, tall, tall.
- This is fast, fast, fast
- This is slow, slow, slow.
- This is yes, yes, yes
- This is no, no, no.
My kids were a little bit bouncy today, so during Boing by Nick Bruel, I had them all act out how they would jump like a kangaroo! And even though they all had read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, many times before, they still loved it and were calling out the letters!
We did a lot of movement and dancing today too. I've been doing a lot of the same music and movement for the past few months, but for Christmas my sister bought me a parachute and I brought it out for the first time today! The kids had a blast with it and knew exactly what to do, despite it being the first use in storytime.

Before our letter A storytime, I caught my storytime kiddos belting out, "Let it Go!"
Frozen will never end, and I'm okay with that!

NOTE: During my storytimes, I use a lot of the same activities, songs, and flannel boards from week to week, so I've decided to only post the ones that actually pertain to the theme, thus, making my posts a lot shorter! And hopefully making them easier for everyone to read!
